Long Bio
Tania Elizabeth is a Grammy-recognized, Juno Award-winning violinist, fiddler, singer-songwriter, and musical collaborator whose career has spanned nearly three decades across folk, Americana, roots, Celtic, and contemporary acoustic music. Equally at home as a band member, solo artist, recording musician, and creative collaborator, she has built a body of work defined by musical curiosity, versatility, and a deep commitment to craftsmanship.
Born in Australia and raised in Canada, Tania began performing professionally while still in her early teens. By fifteen she had released her first independent album, teaching herself to engineer the recording after the producer failed to arrive on the first day of sessions. Rather than seeing the experience as a setback, she viewed it as the beginning of a lifelong habit of figuring things out as she went. She funded a second album through concert fees and record sales, then booked her own cross-Canada tour with her mother as manager, earning a FACTOR grant and partnering with Save the Children Canada to raise awareness about child sexual exploitation. Before turning eighteen, she had already toured Australia as a solo performer, appeared in China, and established herself as one of Canada’s most promising young fiddlers.
At eighteen, Tania moved halfway across the country to co-found The Duhks, whose fearless blend of Celtic, old-time, folk, soul, and roots music helped redefine contemporary acoustic music. The band earned a Juno Award, multiple Grammy and Juno nominations, Folk Alliance and Americana Music Association honors, and an international following built on electrifying live performances. Touring hundreds of days each year exposed Tania to musical traditions from around the world while also revealing the realities of life as a working musician—experiences that would later shape many of her creative interests beyond the stage.
Following her years with The Duhks, Tania became a longtime collaborator with acclaimed songwriter Mary Gauthier, contributing violin, harmony vocals, and arrangements to performances and recordings known for their emotional honesty and powerful storytelling. Since 2013, she has also been a featured touring member of The Avett Brothers, performing on Grammy-nominated recordings and appearing at major festivals and sold-out venues around the world, including Bonnaroo, Coachella, Newport Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, MerleFest, Austin City Limits, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and Stagecoach.
Alongside her work as a collaborator, Tania has maintained an independent artistic voice through her solo recordings, including Gods & Omens and Storm Season. Her playing has also appeared on recordings by artists including Cowboy Junkies, Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield, and many others across the contemporary roots music landscape.
Long before conversations about sustainability became common within the music industry, Tania was asking how artists could build careers without sacrificing their health, relationships, or values. In the early 2000s she founded GreenDuhks, helping pioneer environmentally responsible touring practices through initiatives such as biodiesel transportation, reusable water systems, recycling programs, and partnerships with organizations including Rock the Earth and Clif Bar. At the same time, she began writing about musician health and sustainable touring—work that continues to evolve today.
Now based in Nashville, Tennessee, Tania continues to tour internationally while expanding her creative practice beyond performance. Through writing, mentoring, public speaking, and new interdisciplinary projects, she explores the intersections of music, health, psychology, ecology, and community. Whether performing on stage, collaborating in the studio, or developing new ideas for the future, she remains driven by the same question that has shaped her career from the beginning: How can creativity help us build lives that are not only successful, but sustainable?
About Storm Season
Storm Season (2024)
Storm Season is Tania Elizabeth’s most personal collection of songs to date. Blending folk, Americana, chamber pop, and roots influences, the album explores resilience, transformation, and the quiet work of finding solid ground after life’s upheavals. Rich with cinematic string arrangements, intimate songwriting, and the expressive violin playing that has defined her career, Storm Season reflects an artist unafraid to embrace vulnerability while continuing to search for beauty, hope, and connection. Produced with the same spirit of curiosity that has guided her decades-long career, the album invites listeners into a deeply human landscape where strength is found not in avoiding the storm, but in learning how to live through it.
